Volkwagen Andretti Rallycross and Scott Speed Killing It... X-Games 2014

The 2014 Summer X-Games in Austin took place this weekend, and the Volkswagen/Andretti team definitely made some noise. Scott Speed of Volkswagen Andretti RallyCross claimed the top spot on the Redbull Global RallyCross podium again this year, winning the gold.

Speed not only won the final, but crushed all his races including both heats, and the quarterfinal. This would be his second X-Games victory, his being at the X-Games in Brazil last year. His teammate, Tanner Foust unfortunately was unable to finish his race in the quarterfinal, knocking him out of contention, although he won both his heats.

Volkswagen announced back in February at the Chicago International Auto Show that they were teaming up with Andretti Autosport to enter the Global RallyCross circuit. The team consists of Scott Speed and Tanner Foust, both very seasoned drivers. These drivers have been proving that they will be a force to reckon with this season, with Foust having 22 heat wins and Speed winning the first two races of the season, the first being at the Top Gear Festival Barbados. Both drivers have been racing in two European rallycross prepared Volkswagen Polos. The team will be switching soon to 560+ horsepower All Wheel Drive Beetles, which have been featured at multiple car shows this year.

So who are these hardcore drivers? Well Scott Speed is no stranger to motor sports. The 31 year old began carting at the age of 10, winning a handful of titles. He moved up the Formula Series in 2001, and began driving as a test driver for Red Bull Racing's Formula One team in 2005, the first American to participate in a Formula One event since Michael Andretti in 1993. In 2006, Speed joined Red Bull's Scuderia Toro Rosso team, the relationship lasting for two years. Speed then transitioned into the NASCAR scene, achieving 22 top ten finishes, and a win in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2008. In 2013 Speed joined the GRC circuit, and has been dominating since. He currently is driving the #77 7Up car.

Tanner Foust may be a more recognizable name for most. Foust has been a professional driver since 2003, starting off as a Hollywood stunt car driver. His credits include Iron Man 2, Fast & Furious, a few Bourne movies, and the Dukes of Hazzard. He began hosting the U.S. version of the very popular BBC series, Top Gear in 2010, and just began shooting their fifth season. Besides the big and small screens, Foust is a real contender in the racing world. Foust was the first driver in Formula Drift history to win back-to-back series championships in 2007 and 2008. Foust won his first X-Game in 2007 winning the gold in the rally racing event, and is the most decorated X Games driver with 9 medals. He also raced in the European Rallycross series, being the first American to compete in the Championship. Foust currently drives the #34 Rockstar Energy Drink car for the Volkswagen Andretti team and is featured in a commercial for the all new 2015 GTI.

The next GRC race will be in our own backyard, the Volkswagen RallyCross DC, from June 21-22nd. The event will take place at DC United's RFK Stadium, near Capitol Hill. The city will be transformed to host the event, which is being produced by Andretti Sports Marketing. Tickets are on sale ranging from $20-$149, and will definitely be an event you won't want to miss.

Enthusiasts Unite - Southern Worthesee 2014

Southern Worthersee was this past weekend, and if you’re a gear head like a lot of us at Stohlman, you would have given an arm and leg to make the journey. Southern Worthersee is one of my favorite enthusiast events of the year, reflecting the original European event that is held every year in Worthersee, Austria. 

Title sponsored this year by Unitronic, Southern Worthersee is held in a quant, idealic German inspired town called Helen, Georgia. The event location is suiting, possessing a similar feeling to the town in Austria that the event is named after. SoWo brings out some of the most devoted Volkswagen Group enthusiasts, folks driving all the way from California and Canada. The windy twisted roads that leads to the German inspired Helen can tickle any driving enthusiast, making the experience just that much sweeter. Here are some highlights from the event, including some of my favorite Volkswagens at the show.

Seven Generations of Golf

Volkswagen of America definitely put together one of the coolest displays I’ve seen over the years that would have not been possible without the help of some hardcore enthusiasts. They pulled together a Rabbit/Golf/GTI from each generation, to have 7 including a mk7 GTI, lined up in the front of the Volkswagen display at the show. It really showed the evolution of the popular little hatch, and showcased the hard work and individuality that enthusiasts put into these "hot hatches".

Project Cars

Some of Volkswagens brought to the show are dreamt up by lovely folks at VWoA's Parts and Accessories Department, or the lovely guys at VW Vortex. When dreams become reality, magical things happen. From an old SEMA project Jetta to a SUPER (street illegal) Beetle, the potential for what's to come is endless, as long as the creativity keeps flowing.

Retired Models Live

Enthusiast events are some of the only times when you will see massive amounts of "retired" models that you wouldn't see on the street every day. From models who recently left our lineup like the PassatWagen, or dinosaurs like T2 Dokas, these gems are beautifully revamped to shine like the diamonds they are.

Family Reunion

The Volkswagen community truly is one big family. Enthusiast events are also great times to reunite with old friends with common interests that are spread throughout the U.S. Some of my favorite folks include the great people at Volkswagen Racing, with their North American operations, Racingline USA, based out of Opelika, AL. They definitely have some of the "prettiest" aftermarket parts I've seen, including a Cold-Air Intake System I recently just picked up. 

Another group I enjoy seeing are the guys at Orchid Euro, based out of Norristown, PA. The owner Jamie and his gang specialize in rare and unusual automotive importation. What really caught my attention when I first met them last year was that they created a business by not only importing, but by doing right hand drive conversions. They convert vehicles into cars you'd drive in bloody England! It's truly remarkable, and definitely a perfect rare find if you're in the market. 

Modern Twists 

You don't need an older model to express your creativity. And the enthusiasts at Worthesee definitely didn't hold back for some of these current generation models. Bravo friends, bravo.

Return of the Original Air Cooled

You'll never see so many air-cooled vehicles in one location than at a Volkswagen enthusiast event. Unless you have a time machine and can transport back to the 70's. The iconic Beetle is truly inspirational, and these O.G. Bugs truly show an exuberant display of charisma. 

Previews of What's In Store

Of course we can't just reflect on the past, we have to look at the future! With the new mk7 GTI and Golfs coming out, VWoA's Parts and Accessories Department previewed some parts and body kits that will be offered for the new generation. My favorite in particular is the dual center exhaust option that's available for.... wait for it.... THE GOLF. WHAT?! That's right, the Golf.

If this hasn't convinced you that SoWo is worth experiencing, consider this. The event is held deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest, where the roads are hilly, windy, and smooth because Georgia roads don't experience a quarter of the wear and tear ours do. Not to mention, the gorgeous mountain backdrop that surrounds you. The nature is overwhelmingly beautiful, creating a perfect environment for an ideal driving experience. I'm still on cloud nine after a great weekend in Helen, and I hope that one day you too will be fortunate enough to attend this amazing event.

America's German Sweetheart Gets A Refresh - 2015 Jetta

It's very unlikely, especially in the Northern Virginia area, that you can drive anywhere and not see a Jetta. Whether it may be one of the boxy mk4 Jettas, or our modern day mk6 Jetta, you probably know someone who's owned a Jetta at one point in their lives. Heck, my old roommate and I both rocked Jettas at one point, and my mk5 Laser Blue Jetta is still running like a champ in sunny Columbus, Ohio. A recent press release stated that America's favorite VW model delivered 925,000 units worldwide last year alone, making the popular sedan the top-selling car for both Volkswagen and the entire Group. Big achievements come with some big changes. The 2015 Jetta was unveiled at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, and the news is exciting.

The 2015 Jetta receives a small facelift, a few exterior aesthetic changes to compliment its current design. The radiator grille is redesigned in the front with three cross fins, a new bumper, and optional Bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). Each daytime running light for the Bi-Xenon headlights are formed by 15 LEDs that are arranged in an L-shaped string around the xenon modules, creating a distinctive look. Between the LED daytime running lights and the xenons, a chrome element is also placed. A new visual band is created by the radiator grille and the headlights, and with a larger lower air inlet, the Jetta now has a bigger look. In the back, an integrated spoiler extends to the rear fenders, continuing into the contour of the Jetta’s silhouette. New LED taillights for certain models are available which feature a bright stripe and a redesigned VW logo.

The updated Jetta also gets some properties to improve its aerodynamics.  Air drag has been reduced by the redesigned bumper and air intakes, and defined rain gutters near the A-pillars on the sides. Underbody panels at the rear axle and sill covers with wheel spoilers are also equipped. The new 1.8T engine equipped in the new Jetta models also have modified brake ventilation channels, while the GLI and Hybrid models will have special elements such as new front/rear spoilers and sill extensions. The 1.8T and 2.0 TDI will also receive a new aerodynamic feature that is a closable shutter for the radiator grille. This will help shorten the warm-up process of the engine due to reduced air cooling.

The new 2.0L 150 hp EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine will be offered in the 2015 Jetta. This new TDI is the most fuel efficient yet, estimated to deliver 32 city/45 highway mpg with a manual transmission. The Jetta will also be introduced with a SCR catalytic converter - a complex exhaust gas recirculation system. This system not only meets current emissions standards in the US, but is designed to meet future anticipated regulations. Located newer the engine, the new layout enables faster responses by the oxidation catalytic converter and the SCR catalytic converter. Using the AdBlue additive, the SCR catalytic converter reduces oxides of nitrogen, furthering the reduction of emissions, and also helping to improve the fuel efficiency of the new Jetta.

Inside this new Jetta gets a subtle but big update. A new multifunction steering wheel, redesigned air vent controls, chrome accents around the dual-zone Climatronic control, ambient lighting, piano black accents on the center console and around the gear shift lever, and new fabric colors and seat designs are available. For mid to high trim levels, the dash gauges are framed in chrome-edged tubes, with an available color multifunction display in between. Technology like Blind Spot Detection plus rear cross-traffic alert and frontal collision warning are also now available for this updated Jetta. 

The 2015 Jetta is anticipated to hit dealerships closer to the end of summer. With updates on the inside and outside, America’s VW sweetheart will be hard not to love. Let us know what you think about the refreshed Jetta @stohlmanauto. Until next time!

Golf turns 40! NYIAS Celebrates With Releases and Debuts

Happy birthday to the most successful European car of all time! With more than 30 million Golf models having been sold worldwide, the Golf turns 40 this year. First introduced as the Rabbit, the Golf/Rabbit sold over 100,000 units in its first full year in the US in 1975. The Rabbit continued its success, steadily increasing sales over the next few years and moving production to Westmoreland, Pennsylvania in 1979. The Jetta would soon take over as the most popular Volkswagen model in the U.S., but the Golf would still be a key player, becoming the most popular Volkswagen in the world. Proof that even the small have a mighty roar. 

Hot Hatch is Back

The release of the GTI in Europe in 1976 coined the term "hot hatch", carving the way for vehicles like the Subaru WRX, Ford Focus ST, and Mazda 3. These turbo nuggets have come a long way from its 90 horsepower (1.8L I-4) days. The mk7's that will be on sale this upcoming June, will have the new EA888 TSI engine, gaining 10 hp, and 51 lb-ft of torque. 

The new GTI is bigger, yet about 220 lbs lighter, so faster, and more fuel efficient. New standard features for the GTI include driving mode selection feature, VW Car-Net, touchscreen radio, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, ambient and footwell lighting with LED reading lights, and LED fog lights. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic as an $1100 option. Both two and four-door models will be available, except for the Autobahn trim level, which will only come as a four-door model. 

A Performance Package will be made available later in the year, which will include the torque-sensing electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, larger brakes, and a 10 horsepower increase over the standard GTI for $1495. This Performance Package could give a stock mk6 Golf R a run for its money. To top it off, the new mk7 GTI was also named by WardsAuto editors as one of "2014 Ward's 10 Best Interiors". Fun and sheek? Say no more. The new GTI will start at $24,395, only a $195 increase from the previous generation. Considering this faster whip has grown and shown up with more bells and whistles, I'd say this new price point is a steal. 

Have Our Prayers Been Answered?

What is the holy grail for VW lovers? A manual, AWD, diesel, wagon. When was the last time one was available? Don't make me cry. For years, VW enthusiasts have cried out to the German automotive gods to please give us our dream wagon. Well, our pleading and patience may have paid off. At the 2014 New York International Auto Show, the Golf SportWagen Concept was unveiled. 

What makes this SportWagen special? 4MOTION. The TDI concept comes equipped with AWD, and is promised to go on sale early 2015, replacing the current Jetta SportWagen. Just like its Golf and GTI siblings, the SportWagen will be on the new MQB (modular transverse matrix) platform, increasing in size, room, and fuel efficiency by 17% than the previous generation. The new 1.8L TSI engine and new EA288 2.0L 150 hp TDI engine will be offered with a choice of a six-speed manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. 

Just like the mk7 Golf, the new SportWagen will offer new features like 12-way power driver's seat, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs and Advanced Front-lighting System, and Park Distance Control. The SportWagen will also feature a standard new driver assistance system called Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. The system engages the vehicle's brakes after an airbag deployed collision automatically to reduce secondary collisions and halt the vehicle. The driver can override the system at any time if the system recognizes that the driver is accelerating or the driver initiates braking at a higher rate than 0.6g. The SportWagen will be 1.1 inches longer, and 0.7 inches wider than its current predecessor, increasing rear leg room and cargo space, which will hopefully appease those disappointed with the death of the PassatWagen in the States. 

I cannot guarantee that this SportWagen 4MOTION manual TDI Concept that is being shown at NYIAS will in fact manifest in 2015, but hopefully this teaser will come true. We may have to wait a little longer to confirm that our dreams are becoming reality, but at least now the hope is real.

Every Day Is A Top Down Day - VW Eos and Beetle Convertible

The weather has finally broke in Northern Virginia. This means busting out the kayaks, firing up those grilles, and dropping the top on those convertibles! If you're looking for an affordable but fun German drop top to be the perfect daily driver this Spring, there’s two great options available right now on the Stohlman VW lot.

An All Season Round Convertible?

I grew up in a very magical land, where our professional sports teams haven’t won a championship since 1964 and it snows more than it shines. While growing up in beautiful Cleveland, Ohio, convertible tops opened on average a couple months out of the year, so sacrificing my sunroof to get a few good convertible days here and there was just not an option for me. Cue the VW Eos. The Eos was debuted in North America at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in 2006, and went on sale shortly afterward. The name comes from Greek mythology - Eos, the goddess of the dawn. Besides its beautiful and unique exterior, what makes the Eos special is its roof. The hardtop roof incorporates a five piece folding system, and get this…… a sliding glass sunroof. Boom. It’s the only convertible in it’s class with this fantastic feature, which in my opinion makes it the only hardtop convertible looking at. Besides this amazing roof, the Eos sports a 2.0L Turbo charged engine, same engine you’d find in a 2014 GTI. It is a little slower than a GTI since it’s around 300 lbs heavier, but that extra weight when the top is down gives the vehicle great overall balance, making the Eos extremely fun on windy roads like Skyline Drive. MSRP starts around $36k, and it is not equipped like a normal base model either. The Komfort (base trim) model is equipped with things like 17” Michigan alloy wheels, the RNS 315 touchscreen navigation system, Car-Net, Bluetooth with audio streaming, Climatronic dual-zone electronic climate control with pollen filter, and Halogen reflector lens fog lights with low-speed corner-illuminating feature. Pretty loaded for a base model, wouldn’t you say?

An Icon With a Twist

In love with the Beetle? Want a convertible? Who said you can’t have it all? The Beetle Convertible was released in the winter of 2012. Releasing a convertible in the winter? Isn’t that a little weird? Not when you have a commercial to tie in with the release like this.

The Beetle Convertible maintains the curvature of a Beetle coupe, but sports a gorgeous Black or Beige soft top. German Engineering

We hear it all the time… How superior German made automobiles are. But what does that even mean? Does it mean that our vehicles are literally crafted by the hands of gods? That might be a stretch, but what isn’t far fetched is the performance that is commonly associated with the phrase “German Engineering”. The Germans may sacrifice things like number of cup holders, but they won’t sacrifice on how the vehicle will perform. Volkswagen is a German brand, with vehicles that are built to be driven on the Autobahn. In specific areas during clear weather conditions, the Autobahn literally can have no speed limit. So if you’re wondering if you can pass someone on the highway, or quickly get off the on ramp on 495 in a Volkswagen…… You definitely can.

Speed isn’t the only thing Volkswagen has to offer in terms of your driving experience. The Volkswagen brand has some of the best performance vehicles under one portfolio. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport still holds the Guinness World Record for being the fastest road legal production car. Even former Professional Driver and now Director of Driver Management at Spire Sports + Entertainment, Joey Dennewitz exclusively drives vehicles in the Volkswagen family. His current daily driver is a gorgeous Audi S4, his 4th from the Volkswagen Group. What keeps Joey from straying to others? Simple. He expresses, “it straddles the line of performance versus luxury better than any of the others.. Has the right elements of performance without sacrificing the comfort of a daily driver.” The handling “makes any driver feel like a hero.” Isn’t that all we want in life? To have some resemblance of Ricky Bobby? Well for those of us who aren’t blessed with Will Ferrall’s fictitious character’s driving skills, a Volkswagen could very well be the most reasonably priced compromise to enabling that dream.

Do You Think I’m Pretty?

Did you know that curb appeal isn’t just a factor for new car sales, but for used as well? Volkswagens tend to hold their value very well, and it’s not just because of what they’ve got going on underneath the hood. Volkswagens maintain their identity, even through redesigns, and stay esthetically pleasing over time. The designs are never too bold or too trendy, so that even after 20 years, our vehicles still look good. Clean and classic designs that are ageless is just another reason why our Passat was ranked Most Appealing Midsize Car by J.D. Power in their Power 2013 Apeal Study. I must agree, the Passat is quite appealing, and definitely very pretty. 

Every Time A VW Hits 100,000 miles, a German Engineer Gets Their Wings

In my previous post, the last ad that was featured was our Super Bowl ad from this past year. It stated that every time a VW hits 100k on the odometer, a German Engineer gets their wings. I wish I could say I’ve seen the wings, but I’ve only been to our American facilities, and I’m assuming the international based engineers must be getting priority for receiving their wings as of right now. But nevertheless, it still doesn’t change the facts. Volkswagen has the most vehicles out on the road with over 100,000 miles on the odometer.
